Evolution of Anti-Rape Laws in India

Rape is one of the most common and under-reported crimes against women in India. According to NCRB, India recorded an average 87 rape cases every day in 2019 and 4,05,861 cases of crimes against women during the year 2019 itself. There are even classifications of rape for instance, ‘custodial rape’, ‘caste rape’, ‘gang rape’, ‘class rape’, ‘police rape’, ‘army rape’, ‘rape of minors’ & ‘date rape’. There are also other categories of rapes that are not yet acknowledged by the Indian legal system such as 'marital rape’ and ‘rape of sex workers’.

Farmers Protest against Agriculture Ordinances

Farmers in Punjab & Haryana have been protesting against three ordinances promulgated by the Parliament since the Union Government on September 14th (Monsoon Session) introduced the Farm Bills in the Lok Sabha to replace these three ordinances. The farmers have been protesting against the three bills as they fear getting prices for their crops below the Minimum Selling Price and eradication of the monopoly of the APMC market yards formed under the APMC Act.

Restoration of 4G Internet Services in J&K

“Question of National Security” has been trending since the imposition of ban on internet services in J & K last year. Restoration of the high-speed internet services in two non- border districts is the latest step taken by the J & K Home Department to ease internet restrictions in less sensitive areas. On Aug 5, 2019 Section 144 was imposed in J&K that restricted the unlawful assembly of more than four people in a particular area. The government declared the revocation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution which gave J&K a special status within the Indian union. The government also decided to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories; Ladakh and J & K passing the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, 2019.

Kashmir Issue: Consequences of Abrogation of Articles 370 & 35A

A year after 370 was removed, the question is whether it has attained its objective? Before answering that, another relevant question arises that why Art 370 was brought into existence? It was incorporated as the temporary, transitional and special provision as mentioned under Part XXI of the Constitution. Reading from the title of the provision it’s applicability was very well- projected to last till the formulation and adoption of the State’s constitution. It was basically inserted with the idea to end insurgency and violence after partition. But that failed in its entirety.
