  • The President of India has approved the proposal to introduce the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, in Parliament.

  • The Bill seeks to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act,1956, to increase the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court by four, from the present 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India.

    • Global meteorological models predict a moderate-to-strong El Niño persisting through 2026, which would suppress the Southwest monsoon and affect the planting window for the 2027-28 sugar year.
