Infantino re-elected as FIFA President

Gianni Infantino was re-elected as FIFA President (until 2027) after standing unopposed at the congress of world football’s governing body. He is a Swiss lawyer who succeeded Sepp Blatter, who was removed due to a scandal in 2016. Then, again he was elected unopposed in 2019.  As the statute of FIFA limits a president to a maximum of three or four-year terms; Infantino has already prepared the ground to stay until 2031 by declaring that his first three years (2016- 2019) at the position did not count as a full term. Interestingly, he is determined to expand the men’s World Cup teams from 32 to 48 for the next edition in North America in 2026, and the women’s World Cup will feature 32 teams for the first time in Australia and New Zealand ahead.

Indian-American to receive National Humanities medal from Joe Biden

White House has notified that US President Joe Biden will bestow the 2021 National Humanities Medals upon many recipients, like Indian-American actress, comedian, and writer Mindy Kaling, also referred to as Vera Mindy Chokalingam. Any person or groups who has contributed towards the advancement of art and humanities in America by spreading public engagement with subjects like history, literature, languages, and philosophy are honoured with these awards. These awards will be presented at the White House.

Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary to be the 18th Wildlife sanctuary

The Tamil Nadu Government has notified on the making of 18th wildlife sanctuary of the state that is; Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary which is a home to 21 mammal species, 136 bird species and 118 species of butterflies. It even comprises of elephants, leopards etc. The sanctuary is spread over 80,567 hectares in the forest areas of Anthiyur & Gobichettipalayam taluks in Erode district, it will also include reserve forest areas in Anthiyur, Bargur, Thattakarai and Chennampatti. This sanctuary is located nearer to the Malai Mahadeshwara wildlife sanctuary, It acts as the connecting point between Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve and Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary. However, no restriction has been placed upon the tribals of the region regarding their work, these tribals will not lose their rights given under the Forest Rights Act.

Ratan Tata appointed in ‘Order of Australia’ for distinguished service

Ratan Tata, an Indian industrialist and philanthropist, has been named an Honorary Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AO) for his fantastic contributions to the Australia-India bilateral relationship. Ratan Tata is one of the richest entrepreneurs worldwide who is a Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, former Chairman of the Tata Group, As of 2022, with a net worth of over $1 billion he acted as a strong advocate in deepening the Australian- Indian relations specifically in the areas of trade, investment, and philanthropy. The Australia’s Governor-General made this announcement following a recommendation by Australia’s High Commissioner. 

Burundi: First Polio Outbreak in 30 Years

Burundi is an east-African country, which has been witnessing its first polio outbreak in 30 years. The outbreak was confirmed after a child aged 4 years in the Isale district of western Burundi, along with two other children who were in contact with him, were diagnosed with vaccine-linked polio. Also, poliovirus type 2 was detected in five samples extracted from environmental surveillance of wastewater from the region. Burundi is once again strengthening polio surveillance, with WHO experts by increasing sample collection and assessing the possibility of opening new environmental surveillance sites for early detection of this poliovirus. This fastest spreading poliovirus type 2 is the most prevalent form of polio and this virus’ outbreak has led more than 400 cases in 14 countries in 2022. This Type 2 infection can occur when the weakened strain of the virus present in the oral polio vaccine, circulates among under-immunized populations for longer time.

Global Conference on Digital Health with the motto ‘Taking Universal Health Coverage to the Last Citizen’

India’s Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) South-East Asia Regional Office, had organized a Global Conference on Digital Health in New Delhi on March 20 and 21, 2023. With the theme “Taking Universal Health Coverage to the Last Citizen.” This conference was based on exploring the potential of digital health solutions to enhance healthcare delivery & achieve universal health coverage targets. In his virtual address to the conference, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, India’s Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare will also attend, focused on the critical role of digital health in improvising healthcare systems. Global health experts, policymakers, and leaders from the public and private sectors attended the conference. Leveraging India’s presidency of the G20, the joint objective of the global conference is to energize a high-level global dialogue on the foundations of digital health for UHC.

RBI's Shaktikanta Das named 'Governor of the Year' by Central Banking

The RBI Governor, Shaktikanta Das was awarded the title 'Governor of the Year' for 2023 by Central Banking. He was given this title due to his leadership during difficult time, like the failure of an important non-banking company or the pandemic, and the inflationary effects which were the result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Even the Ukraine’s National Bank was also awarded the Central Bank of the Year award. 

What is Central Banking?

Central Banking is an international economic research journal and Shaktikanta Das has become the second governor to receive this award after Raghuram Rajan, who was awarded back in 2015. Awarding Shaktikanta Das, the publication said that the governor helped in dealing with multiple obstacles, like the pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, that fuelled inflation globally that in turn forced central banks to raise hikes. 

US Senate confirms Eric Garcetti as Ambassador to India

The United States of America (USA) Senate approved the appointment of Eric Garcetti as the next US Ambassador to India. His appointment will play a key role in setting the diplomatic position which had been vacant for more than two years. Garcetti’s nomination was confirmed with a 52-42 vote, that was pending before the US Congress since July 2021. Why so? Keep reading. Kenneth Juster was the last occupant of the ambassadorial residence of the US in New Delhi, who stepped down in January 2021. Did you know? US President Joe Biden first nominated Garcetti in July 2021 to swore in as the ambassador of India, and the committee initially signed off on him in January 2022.

His nomination has been in halt for a year after certain allegations that Garcetti knew about sexual misconduct which one of his former top advisers committed and still he maintained silence on the issue it.

Uttarakhand becomes 1st state to start insurance scheme for sericulturists

In this pilot project's first phase, Uttarakhand has become India's first state to launch the Resham Keet Bima scheme for sericulturists (raw silk producers). But how many have been insured under this? Nearly 200 sericulturists from five blocks of four districts: Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, and Nainital have been insured from the ill effects of climate change, scarcity of water, or other disasters. This scheme will be run under Saral Krishi Beema.

World’s longest railway platform

1.5 km at Sri Siddharoodha railway station in Hubballi (Karnataka) is the world’s largest railway platform. Because of this, Hubballi got its name registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. This place is a major hub for trade and commerce in North Karnataka, which links railway lines towards Bengaluru, Hosapete and Vasco-Da-Gama or Belagavi.  But why this new construction is done? Because of the newly constructed platform is expected to deal with crowding and enhance the travel experience for train passengers.
